“I was asked why I focus on educating parents and why I would write yet another book for parents on ASD, particularly when there are so many other books out there on the subject.
Well, it is my belief that parents are the core of the family unit and as such we bring our own life experiences to the mix, both positive and negative, and this definitely impacts the lives of our children – I know that what information we have at the time will determine the strength of that family unit. I have had a lot of experience in this field, and so this book is my gift to you so that you can make the best possible impact on your family, experiencing rewarding and fulfilling time with them and achieving wonderful results.
If you had have asked me what I expected motherhood to be like when I was first pregnant with my son, Brandon, it would have been a simple answer – I thought it would be just like the books that I’d read about what to expect – why wouldn’t I? After all, they were written by educated people who supposedly “knew a thing or two”, right?
What I didn’t know then, but am acutely aware of now, is that a lot of those books were written by academics who are presumed to know the theory of how it’s all supposed to be.
Boy, what a shock when I realized
that a lot of what is written is not based on real life.
Okay, to be fair, those theories may fit a small percentage of the human race, but unfortunately it doesn’t work very well for the rest of us.
And this is where we started to fall apart – no book had what we needed, and we couldn’t find a professional at that stage who could help us answer our questions because we were outside of the square – my son was ‘not like every other child’. So we were alone for many years before we really started to get some traction and a good grip on this journey of parenting.
Emotions were strong, confusing and highly intense: judgments were coming toward us from strangers who had no idea what we were living on a day to day basis, and yet one fateful day I realized that if I was to give up, then who else would my son have?
From that day my life has moved to the Kerri that you see now or will encounter through my books, CDs, Workshops and Personal Consulting. I knew at that moment that only I could make the changes that would shift us out of the mess that we were in – and I realized that a parent’s determination cannot really be taken away from them, so long as they are educated in certain areas – to make sure their efforts are not in vain: then they become the strongest element to a child’s success.
And so it is with this in mind that I write this book. Even if it’s only in some small way, it’s my aim that this book will help guide you out of the darkness too – helping to keep you in a more constructive frame of mind as you guide your little ones through the twists and turns and rapids that are part of the river of life, so that you all may enjoy the fruits that this wonderful life has to offer.”
