Emotions were not explained to me when I was a child. I either heard, “Gee you’re happy” or “Why are you so angry?” For me as a child, that led to a belief that I was only ever angry or happy, and nothing more.
When I became a mother, I realized that I had followed the same pattern as my parents, and didn’t take the time to identify my children’s different emotions either; actually, I hadn’t taken the time to help them define any emotions other than angry or happy.
Writing this book for my children allowed me to draw parallels between their emotions and the emotions of the characters in the book who experienced different situations in their day just like they did.
As an example, my son was nervous about attempting a task. He ran and hid, so I spoke to him about ‘Brave Billy’ and how he was nervous, yet once he attempted the task, he found it was not too bad. This gave my son an image to reflect on and he realized he was nervous; that not only added another emotion to his list, but it also gave him the courage to at least have a go like Brave Billy did. When he completed the task, I drew the parallel that he was a brave boy just like Brave Billy. You could almost see him puff up with pride in himself.
